WHAT WE DO

Research shows that participation in OST programming is linked to such educational benefits as better attitudes towards school, improved academic performance and higher educational aspirations (Little & Harris, 2003). Prosperity Prep teaches social entrepreneurship to guide students’ career and educational aspirations. Each student receives one-on-one “future planning” complete with progress monitoring and career interest assessment.

By using “community” as our central focus and social entrepreneurship as a response to its social problems, higher education becomes a necessary part of the path to your career. Our approach takes college-going beyond the “get a good job” mentality. In Prosperity Prep, college is where we get the opportunity to learn and hone the craft we will use to help our community and make our living. In this way, we give college a deeper purpose that students can use to drive them when the journey to graduation becomes difficult.

Using the Out-of-School Time (OST) model, the Learning by Doing Initiative supports Prosperity Prep’s curriculum and core values.  The program uses the resource of hours after school to promote habits that lead to college readiness and completion. The Learning by Doing Initiative can provide needed preparation and exposure prior to high-school graduation. Overall,  this project can provide time outside of the classroom to engage in content areas not covered in school such as higher education, career planning, cultural exploration and civic involvement; supporting a “whole-child” approach

Prosperity Prep is a non-profit education and mentorship organization offering Out-of-School-Time (OST) programming for girls 11-14 in inner-city Philadelphia. Through leadership training, girls become creators and leaders of youth-managed service initiatives, placing students at the helm of community improvement. With an emphasis on scholarship, the goal is for the girls we serve to advance academically, to be prepared for higher education and to take leadership in their respective career fields.

The program promotes social entrepreneurship to guide girls toward opportunities to enhance the quality of life for under-resourced communities in Philadelphia, while simultaneously improving their own lives. Prosperity Prep is founded on the idea of “Prosperity through Community”. We only prosper through becoming active participants in the prosperity of our communities. The community is our driving force. The eradication of chronic, dream-threating poverty is our end goal.

The Prosperity Prep Program consists of three major components; the content-based curriculum, the practice-based curriculum and the mentorship-based curriculum.By bringing proven educational practices to the out-of-school time (OST) programming model, Prosperity Prep offers a unique educational experience rooted in both study and practice.

Prosperity Prep is a member of the New Beginnings Non Profit Incubator at Resources for human Development, Inc. (RDH) The New Beginners incubator provides small and startup nonprofit programs with a range of services and support designed to help the grow to achieve their missions. Prosperity Prep is responsible for all its own fundraising.
